Insulation and Air Sealing

Insulation and Air Sealing

Insulation and air sealing is one of Building Efficiency’s key services and the foundation of energy efficiency and whole-building performance. Detecting drafts and then insulating and air sealing is the fastest, most cost-effective ways to save energy and increase comfort in a home. We have seen, on average, a 20-50% energy savings in our customers’ energy bills after fully insulating and air sealing the drafty locations in their homes. Any home built prior to 1974 (pre-energy code) probably doesn’t have insulation or has inadequate levels of insulation in the walls, attic, and floor. Homes built prior to 1990 probably have inadequate levels of insulation in the home as well.

Using science-based instruments, we calculate the R-value of your home; the higher the R-value, the better your walls or attic will resist transfer of heat. Building Efficiency advises you on choice of materials and methods, including loose fill, dense pack, batt, or foam insulation. We use a variety of materials/techniques to air seal the home, checking doors, fireplaces, electrical and plumbing penetrations, recessed can lights, and attic/crawl-space doors. Our goal is 35% of fresh air cycling into the home every hour for an energy-efficient, healthy home environment.

Green Building Facts

  • Buildings are responsible for 48% of greenhouse gases in the U.S.
  • Americans spend on average 90% of their time indoors.
  • Indoor air is 4 to 5 times more polluted than outside air.
  • Energy improvements typically have a simple payback of 1 to 5 years.
  • Improvements typically include insulation, duct sealing, furnace and lighting upgrades.
  • Typical energy savings range from 20 to 50%.
  • A 25% reduction of U.S. home energy consumption = taking half the cars off the roads.
